Growing up with a dad who is an engineer was quite a handful I must say...I mean, being tasked to move heavy toolboxes from one part of the house to another, and the ringing sound of metals!...omg! was not funny lol...but for some reason, I became interested in a particular fix that was tagged little yet a crucial part of any automotive...The Spark Plug!.. (Yes!! the spark plug)

No matter how much a car is worth, it consists of metals and an engine that runs daily..." every day for the thief, a day for the owner" they say... I watched how he takes out the plugs, cleans them, and reinstalls them.....funny how it works EVERYTIME!!!! I was startled at the miracle a tiny spark plug could do with just a few steps.

What is a spark plug? A spark plug is an electrical device that is used in internal combustion engines to ignite compressed aerosol gasoline using an electric spark.

How does a spark plug work?

Spark plugs supply the spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture, creating the explosion that makes your engine produce power.

Where can I find my spark plug?

Many vehicles have engine covers that you’ll need to remove to access the spark plug wires.

• Spark plugs in four-cylinder engines are located on the top or side of the engine in a row.

• Spark plugs in inline six-cylinder engines are usually located on the top or side of the engine head.

• Spark plugs in V6 and V8-cylinder engines are generally split evenly across either side of the engine.

How to clean your spark plug?

  • Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket to unscrew it.

  • Clean the abrasives using 220-grit sandpaper on the electrode (the part that goes into the engine)

  • Keep sandpapering the electrode until it looks like bare metal.
  • Proceed to file down the grim on the electrode if dirty, scrub the thread with a wire brush and apply a brake cleanser on the plug to effectively clean it.

  • Hold the end of the plug and ignite the electrode using a blow torch until the flame turns blue (this burns off all debris on the spark plug).

  • Allow the plug to cool before reinstalling them.

Why is a spark plug important?

The importance of a spark plug can not be over-emphasized and here are a few points to note;

• Increased fuel economy: New spark plugs help maximize your fuel economy. It can improve your vehicle combustion rate by as much as 30% when kept in good shape.

• Optimal combustion and ignition: Spark plugs are an essential part of your ignition system, without them, combustion cannot occur.

• Smooth vehicle startup: When spark plugs are kept in good shape, starting your engine is smooth, easy, and free from any form of resistance.
