The transformation of the Ijora under-bridge into a recreational space has been announced by the Lagos State Government.

According to an article on PUNCH Online, the government recently demolished illegal shanties occupied by squatters under the bridge after issuing a five-day quit notice.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, expressed concerns about the security risks posed by block moulders, fuel sellers, and miscreants in the area, emphasizing that the government would not tolerate such activities.

Giving an update on the situation, Wahab shared on his social media platform that the cleared space will be repurposed for the public enjoyment of Lagos residents.

He stated that after the expiry of the Commissioner's notice to unauthorised residents of the Ijora under-bridge, the Special Task Force, led by ACP Bayo Sulaiman, carried out the removal of makeshift structures and afterwards the Lagos Waste Management Authority promptly began clearing the debris.

He also made it clear that the initiative goes beyond mere demolition and clearance and in line with the directives of Governor #jidesanwoolu and HC #tokunbo_wahab, a team consisting of the General Manager of LASPARK, Hon. Adetoun Popoola; the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende; and the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye, has embarked on a project to transform this area into a recreational space.

According to him, the aim of this endeavor is to restore the public space for the benefit of Lagos residents, with input from community members during the inspection and planning process and that the transformation of the Ijora under-bridge will complement the ongoing refurbishment of the nearby National Theatre Complex and further improve the quality of life for the people of Lagos.
