By the end of 2024, the Lagos State government plans to introduce a fleet of 2,000 buses running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), with the first phase of 1,000 buses set to hit the roads. This initiative, aimed at mitigating the impact of the federal government's fuel subsidy removal on residents, was announced by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, at the 2024 ministerial briefing in Ikeja.
In addition to the CNG buses, the state government is poised to launch 231 electric vehicles by the end of June 2024, as part of its efforts to provide a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective transportation system. The government is working with a private company to acquire the CNG buses, which will be rolled out in two phases.
According to Osiyemi, the ultimate goal is to provide a safer, more affordable, and climate-friendly energy solution for residents and the general public. The introduction of electric vehicles will complement the existing fleet of diesel and petrol-powered vehicles, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable transportation system in Lagos.
